The Great Gatsby!

A HUGE trend for weddings in 2013 is to have a 1920′s theme!  We just adore all things 1920′s!  From Downton Abbey styled garden parties to the fab the Art-Deco design that we see in famous Cincinnati architecture.  AND, now F. Scott Fitzgerald’s beloved novel has (yet again) been turned into a blockbuster feature film and more brides are turning to art- deco design and the jazz era of the 20′s for wedding themes and inspiration.

Even if you aren’t a literature buff, who doesn’t want to experience a good love story with Leo?!?  Just look as this image from the movie and try not to be in love with the glittering opulence of the roaring twenties…not to mention the smoldering look in Gatsby’s eyes…oh, my. ALL of Daisy’s blingy jewels and hair pieces were designed by Tiffany’s!  See the official Tiffany & Co. pinboard with all of the over-the-top Gatsby inspired creations.

A great leaping off point for this look is the wedding dress selection.  Claire Pettibone has the 1920′s look down to a SCIENCE. She has taken intricate art deco styling and drop-waist designs and turned them into modern elegant and care-free modern looks. See the entire Windsor Rose China collection!  If you are looking for cool 20′s glam, this is a fantastic place to start!

Because Gatsby IS the main character, we have to talk about his famous crisp white suits.  Brooks Brothers has thoughtfully created a totally new collection called “The Great Gatsby Collection”–just might be right for your groom!

The overall look of the wedding reception should be drama, drama, drama.  Tall feathered centerpieces above stately gold and black place settings create major impact. An art-deco stationery suite sets the tone for the event.  Of course, we all know it’s all in the details…we just love the small table scape around the table number and the use of chevron (a decidedly 2013 trend) to update the 20′s look. viva bella events | Dora Manuel | Cincinnati Wedding Planner | Great Gatsby wedding inspiration

At one point in the novel, Gatsby remarks “I like large parties, they are so intimate. At small parties there isn’t any privacy.” ;) Don’t you just love that?  The viva bella team really gets excited about creating lounge areas with carefully chosen furniture for the cocktail hour and additional intimate lounges tucked away in corners of the reception area.  To get this glam Great Gatsby look, use towering feathered arrangements, sparkling chandeliers, mirrors (another big 2013 trend), neutral colors, and of course, killer lighting to create just the right mood.

We just have to mention: a few years ago, one of our brides was inspired by the 1920′s art-deco design of the Cincinnati Hilton Netherland Plaza.  Here is an overview shot below of her uber-glam reception.  See all the details of this wedding featured by Style Me Pretty here and DO NOT miss the truly amazing gold art-deco cake!

Our getaway at the new 21c!

With Joy on the road to recovery, I decided Stevie and I needed some time away after a very long and taxing first two months of the year. But I had some limitations:

1) I wanted to get away on a weekend when Stevie already had some obligations.

2) I didn’t want to travel to another city, in case Joy had any problems in the night (her cast was just off and she was experiencing quite a bit of pain).

3) I wanted to surprise my man!

So here’s what I did: I told Stevie I’d plan a Friday afternoon date so that he’d block the time off on his schedule. Meanwhile, I was secretly canceling his Saturday morning commitments (Yeah!), packing his bag, and making reservations for fun things! I’d been wanting to check out the new 21c Museum Hotel, since viva bella is planning a couple of events there later this year. I also thought that going there would meet our need to stay local. But how could we make it feel like a “getaway”…?

After making my online reservations, I received a personal email asking if there was anything the 21c could do to make our stay more enjoyable. (Traveler tip: always respond to these emails and tell them what you want! Their business relies upon your being happy with your stay- and they asked! Might as well answer their questions, right?!) I wrote back sharing that we’d had a difficult start to the year and would appreciate anything they could do to make our stay personal and comfortable. To my delight, I received an email back saying they’d love to accommodate us and would send up strawberries and champagne sometime during our stay. Very nice touch!

When the “afternoon Friday date” arrived, I told Stevie we’d be going to a museum (a pastime he loves). When we pulled in front of the hotel, he was excited because the 21c is an avant-garde museum and hotel (he visited their location in Louisville years ago and is really pleased they now have a Cincinnati location).

When the valet opened our door and said “Checking In?” Stevie was shocked when I blurted out, “Yes!” He was even more surprised when his overnight bag was pulled from our trunk. He said, “…but honey… I have meetings in the morning…”, and was over the moon when I told him I’d already gotten him out of everything!

We checked into our room and were so excited about the idea of having a night away together, without any responsibilities. He was already getting into full relax mode on the couch with a magazine and ESPN, when I told him not to get too comfortable since we had an appointment… at the spa! I had reserved a couple’s massage for us: their treatment room (which I’d seen on a preferred vendor tour weeks prior) has heated floors (nice touch!) and a hot tub “bath” in the spa room which we were able to enjoy for 30 minutes after our massages. It was all so relaxing and wonderful! Needless to say, Stevie was willing to leave sports highlights for a while!

After our massage, we got dressed up and walked down to Jeff Ruby’s for our dinner reservations.

Later, we came back to our room where the champagne and strawberries were waiting! Are you getting the idea of what a dreamy day this was? We felt like we were miles and miles away- though we live like 10 miles up the road! Stevie even commented that he felt like we’d been on vacation for days before hitting the hay that night. Just what I was hoping for.

The next morning, after a quick workout, we had a fantastic brunch at Metropole. We were both really impressed at their simple but delicious food; it’s just the kind of thing we like: food that hasn’t been over-engineered, but with some interesting and surprising touches.

It was such a sweet, refreshing day away together- we really felt renewed and ready to tackle rehab and all the other challenges in our lives. It was a big success for both of us, and many thanks go to the hospitable professionals at the new 21c.  We can’t wait to produce viva bella events there!

Behind-the-Scenes CrAziNesS!

We know you’ve seen Amanda & Travis’s “Glamourous Sophistication” featured in Inside Weddings, right?  The event was romantic, peaceful, glamourous and went off without a hitch!  Kortnee Kate‘s images were even chosen for national publication!  BUT…can we let you in on a little secret?  Taking care of business behind-the-scenes can get pretty CrAzY!
Pulling of an event like Amanda and Travis’ wedding requires everyone working together and we had an amazing vendor team to make that happen. But EVERY big event has its hiccups and in those moments, we have to pull together and problem solve so our wonderful bride and groom don’t worry about a thing!
So, here is how Amanda and Travis spent their time the day of the wedding…
Amanda getting glammed up at High Five Salon, and…

Meanwhile back at Greenacres…
On Friday, the day before the wedding, we found out that the truck delivering our chairs from Chicago broke down and was going to be a couple hours late (things just happen!). Luckily, we had the “Cousin Crew”!  Monica’s cousins have become our go-to man power so we already had them lined up to come to do a few quick set-up things. However, we ended up using them all day Friday!  When the truck arrived we had a team set up unload and set up chairs waiting there– plus the truck drivers were amazing and helped us get it all done!
Chi-CinMap
Ooops!  When the chairs did arrive, the chairs were not dressed how we ordered them.  Again, Cousin Crew to the rescue!  The crew came back the next day and worked for 7 hours!  But, come on, don’t these guys looks like they are having a good time? ;)
Cousin Crew
And, the Chameleons turned out to be showstoppers.  I’m still in love with these chairs…

Hmmm, next, was the aisle runner dilemma! We had envisioned the aisle runner to be an extra wide 8 feet. In order to do this, we ordered a wide 60 inch runner (custom designed with the invitation design, of course!) plus additional pieces of runner to add on each side. Well, the aisle runner came perfectly designed, yet the additional pieces we ordered were not split ahead of time… something we did not realize until set up! So we had to figure out how to split a 75 foot aisle runner ourselves. We spent a lot of time debating the best way to do this! We ended up cutting the aisle runner after it was laid out (against Monica’s better judgment to split it BEFORE we laid it out… hindsight is 20/20 – we should have split it before it was laid out! Try taking scissors to 75 feet of aisle runner!).

Okay, on to the next surprise!
Our amazing catering partner graciously offered to help us lay out all of the guest napkins on the tables. The napkins are so beautiful on both sides that the catering staff placed all of the napkins inside out!  It actually looked beautiful, but being perfectionist and wanting to deliver exactly what we had showed our client at the design meeting, we went back and had to reverse each one.  And yes, you have to be OCD to be in this business! :)

I really love this behind the scenes image below.  My awesome friend, the amazingly talented Kevin Ford, is working over the centerpieces with Jim from Greenacres.  I love that you can see his smile–he is such a joy to work with!  And, I love that you can really tell how tall the arrangements were.  They were enormous and made such a dramatic effect on the space!

Another problem to solve: The lighting gobos we had ordered came in as squares while the fixtures they went into were round. But both Camargo Events and Goodwin Lighting worked together to fix it.  We were so pleased with the end result and obviously, the lighting was perfect for a solo performance by this sweet flower girl!

It’s a great feeling to walk around a venue like Greenacres and see everyone working together to ensure a spectacular event.  The Greenacres staff cleaning the fountain and making sure we could see the beautiful night sky from inside the tent…

Well, here is where we get really creative…  See this cocktail table below?  We wanted it to be the exact height as the two sofas.  It was a little tall, so…yeah, Camargo agreed it needed to be perfect and chopped off the legs for us…and wah-lah! A couch table at the perfect height!

All this day-of stuff is exciting to figure out, but the realtime snafu’s are where we have to really be innovative!  Like, when Amanda’s family forgot the wedding bands in his car and no one realized it until after the ceremony had begun!  Questions race in our minds… How do we get his keys?  Where is his car?  Ahhh!  We decided to forget the real rings and use stand ins!  Quick thinking Hanna offered her wedding band and we talked the videographer, Steve Zugelter, out of his!  In this photo below you can’t even tell that Amanda and Travis were both thinking “this isn’t quite right!”
Cincinnati Wedding Planner | Dora Manuel | wedding rings

Don’t trust a wedding planner who doesn’t carry a bag of tricks!  We have an emergency kit with anything and everything a wedding party might need.  In this case, Amanda’s bustle broke on her wedding gown. So what did we do?  We just pinned the entire thing together with giant safety pins.  No one could even see the pins and it sure didn’t slow Amanda down!!!

At the end of the night, even a tough guy like Superman needed a break!

Cincinnati Wedding

The whole point is that we love this stuff!–trouble-shooting, putting out fires, rolling with the punches!  And we had an amazing vendor team  who was with us the whole way solving problems until everything was perfect. We all find such satisfaction in knowing that the bride, the groom, and their families had the time of their lives and had no idea of the craziness behind-the-scenes.
Our stellar problem solving team: Hanna, Monica, Dora, & Gretchen.

More viva bella weddings in the news!

Today, we get to share with you two equally gorgeous, but totally different weddings!  Both were recently featured in the news–one, a national wedding blog, and the other a local lifestyle print magazine!

First up: Cara & Josh’s romantic vineyard wedding at Ertel Cellars is featured on the Wedding Wire blog!

Can’t you just feel how in love these two are?!  Cara’s dress was one of our favorite elements of this wedding.  I mean, seriously, check out this sexy back!

The bridesmaids’ bright yellow flowers were so cheery against the graphite gray dresses!  We just love how the light among the vines is reflected yellow onto the leaves…what a beautiful backdrop for fun bridesmaid shots!  Cara also wore cowboy boots (adorbs) with her “something blue” socks peeking out.
viva bella events | vineyard wedding | rustic wedding For the reception decor, Cara wanted vintage, rustic elements with burlap runners and black lanterns. Then, she playfully combined them with modern yellow chevron fabrics.  Who isn’t in love with chevron right now?!  We also loved the wine glasses as escort cards and favors…perfect for a vineyard wedding!

Pecina-small

Cara shared with Wedding Wire one of the most memorable moments of her wedding day: “Right after the ceremony our wedding planner handed me a glass of wine and my husband a beer and we walked to the front of the vineyard to take some final pictures. We had a brief moment alone, newly married and it was wonderful.”

Way to go, Hanna!  We think little moments like this are so very special for the bride and groom–making sure they have a little couple time!  This day is all about them!

When they slipped away after the ceremony, Cara & Josh took these fun pictures with a bright blue antique truck.  Beautiful colors, setting sun, and KISSING.  Lots and lots of kissing!  ;)

 Switching gears…

Just this past week, Jennifer & Jeremy’s “Pretty in Plum” wedding was featured by Venue Magazine!

Desktop5 copy

Oh, we just love the images above.  The look on Jennifer’s face says it all!  So happy…and so in love!

The Drees Pavilion was just right for this reception, the bridge and cityscape background is really great for gorgeous sunset pictures. The bridesmaids’ full-length pewter gowns were so sophisticated and beautiful, especially against the pops of purple, plum, and deep pinks.  And, how cute are those junior bridesmaids? So sweet.

Hesselbrock Fassler-564

Speaking of the cityscape backdrop…as the Maid of Honor gave her toast, fireworks went off in the background!!!  Not a part of our planning, but hey, the timing was just right and it looked amazing!

Choosing linens with Jennifer was so fun!  She wanted deep purple and shimmery silver, so we did alternating tables–square with pewter gray and round with eggplant.  One of our favorite details was the silver chain table cap by La Tavola above for the head table.

Jennifer chose a simply beautiful white wedding cake, and our friends at Yellow Canary created a sweet cascade of flowers. And, of course, we have to mention the La Tavola linen in plum New York sequin on the cake table! ;)

Goodwin Lighting made the dance floor light up with purple-y swirls–everyone wanted to get out there!  Another one of our favorite elements of this night, was the Same Day Edit video by Steve Zugelter and his Studio Z Films crew.  It was amazing!  Seeing Jennifer and Jeremy sit and reflect on their day and really be in the moment–what a treasure!

Jennifer told Venue Magazine, “I could not have asked for a better wedding!”

Fun viva bella Team Photos

Recently, we have done a little updating with marketing materials and our website, so decided we needed fun new team photos!  Any excuse to get dolled up by BRIDEface and call up Kortnee Kate, right?

The day of our shoot it was absolutely FREEZING!  Kortnee came with the perfect shot in mind, so the first thing we had to do was carry our conference room chairs across Madison Road! I’m sure the passersby thought we were crazy, but not Kortnee–she had to snap a picture of this!  And, leading the pack is Hanna’s sweetie, baby Molly.  She was a perfect angel, laughing at us and playing with her toys…until we had been out there too long.  A girl can only be patient so long!

Kortnee loves to have our team looking at each other and laughing.  We feel so corny doing it, but it makes the cutest shots!

This is our fierce “Charlie’s Angels” shot–complete with the sun coming up behind to highlight our hair.  Don’t we look like we could plan a killer event?!? :)

Love this one below that includes Rachel (she’s not part of our wedding planning team, she does corporate development, BUT we have secret plans to make her into a planner, yet!) ;) Rachel gets the “coldest” award–she was so cold I didn’t think she’d make it!
